Cough, cough, could you PLEASE extinguish your cancer stick?
While there are many things I love about Jordan, the proportion of the population that smokes inconsiderately isn't one of them. It is hard to go to a restaurant, office, or anywhere really and not be "treated" to the horrible smell of cigarette smoke. And, at restaurants, people are even more likely than American smokers to hold their cigarette above their heads outside of their booth, presumably "sharing" them with their neighbors. What a time to be sharing! And, while all of that bothers me, here's what actually bothers me much, much more...
- Packs of young children, no older than 7 or 8 roaming the streets after school smoking
- Pregnant mothers smoking and damaging the fragile lungs of their unborn children
- Parents puffing away while their children suffer from the traumatic effects of second hand smoke
The American Cancer Society shares these effects of second hand smoke:
"Secondhand smoke can be harmful in many ways. In the United States alone, each year it is responsible for:
- an estimated 35,000 deaths from heart disease in people who live with smokers but are not current smokers
- about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking adults
- other respiratory problems in nonsmokers, including coughing, phlegm, chest discomfort, and reduced lung function
- 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in children younger than 18 months of age, which result in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations
- increases in the number and severity of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to 1 million asthmatic children
- increased incidence of middle ear infections in young children
Pregnant women exposed to ETS are also at increased risk of having low birth weight babies. "
I aks you, is this what we want for the future of Jordan? Asthma, respiratory infections, low birth weight, isn't it time to protect this most precious of all assets? Can't we speak out for those who have no voice? It's time for us to make a stand. I urge all bloggers to unite. Blog about this, talk about this, e-mail your friends. Please get involved. And, as a first (and easiest) step, sign the petition that El 3atal has created. You can find it at http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/JordanSmokingBan.
It's time for us to decide what we want for our children, for Jordan's future, for OUR future. Join us and make your voice heard. In fact, make their voice heard, those children who can't speak for themselves and whose environment is causing them to make choices that they can't take back. One of the lovely Konouz heard us talking about this over the weekend and said he'd heard that each cigarette takes a minute off your life. Our hearts should cry out for those 7 and 8 year olds who are already killing themsleves. Please join with us and give them a choice.
Happy future!

Grrrr....
ok take this whole comment with some consideration and don't just overlook it please ....
I am fine with your right to breathe fresh air, something you have a right to, and claiming first hand health risks is fine with me too i don't mind that.
Quoting the ETS '93(the numbers there) as bases of mobilization is just not fine by me.
now there are no studies that support the idea that SHS is a major contributor to an increase in lung cancer among people who live/work with smokers
Studies: there are 3 references that discuss SHS
ETS '93 is a meta analysis, and not a study. they didn't do any work worthy of a study, and they have predetermined the results and skewed the numbers accordingly. that is beside the many other questionable methods used in this analysis.
The WHO which was a study, conducted on a far larger sample and more rigorous statistical methods. did not find any significant statistical causation in support of the claims usually made, the only significant factor they came out with is that children of smokers are actually 22% less likely to have lung cancer. interesting eh ?
the last reference is Helena, which was proved to be fraudulent beyond doubt and its the latest one (2003)
The fact of the matter is that those studies are costly, so of course studies that are interested in finding the truth are under budgeted. so its fair to base it of personal preference rather than pseudo science until we have something solid
Am willing to go into more details, but all am saying is that SHS is annoying but it doesn't kill :P
Enjoy
ps. please check my commment on kinzi's post for reference
No Angel,
How about our right not to smell that stinky smoke emitted by another person's lung. Does that strike you as a good basis for a petition to ban smoking in public places? If so, sign the petition. Again, I'm not trying to stop you from smoking, I just think that if you smoke in a place that I have no option but to be in, say the DMV, then I have a righ to demand that you extinguish your cigarette.
Peace
No Angel,I understand where you are coming from. However, my perception is that smoking does harm the health of those around you. I am encouraged about your statistic of decreased incidence of lung cancer death in children of smokers. Perhaps because they saw the less pleasant side and made the choice to forego the ciggys? At any rate, I still stand by my statement that we need to speak out for those who can't. At 7 or 8, you aren't making an informed life decision... And, the number of WAY under-aged smokers in Jordan is very sad. As is the number of pregnant smokers...
What a thing to share with others - smoking - !
Nice blog :)
Thanks Osaid. And welcome! I hope you continue to enjoy the blog.
